Historic Kirkwood Walking Tours

Families moved to Kirkwood, according to one late-nineteenth-century writer "to give the youngsters a chance to skip over fields instead of brick pavements, and fill their lungs with country ozone instead of city smoke." Such people shaped the community and they are the real subject of this tour. The sites selected for special comment were not singled out because they are the oldest or most beautiful, or associated with very important people. They are instead a set of places with stories to tell which help us to gain an understanding what life was like in the past. Besides these, there also are many old and architecturally interesting houses which must have their own unrecorded stories to tell.

Over the course of more than a century, Kirkwood has changed, as it will continue to do in the future, but it remains a place in which we can perceive the way in which it came to be what it is.

 

The owners of the sites which are described have not been asked to open their buildings or grounds and your cooperation is asked in protecting their privacy.

 

For convenience, a walking tour of the Historic area of Kirkwood has been divided into four smaller tours, designated by numbers One through Four. Each originates and ends at the Kirkwood Railroad Station on Argonne at Kirkwood lad. Tours One, Two and Three can be integrated into one longer tour without the need of returning to the starting point simply by changing tours where their respective routes cross. By doing so, the total tour covers about six miles.
